Monday's Computer Lesson ——John Cabot

In this picture, John Cabot and his sailors found the coast of Newfoundland. He and his man were hailing and cheering for the great victory because they may have been the first Europeans to set foot on the North American mainland since the Vikings. The man who stands straight and holds up bend slightly is John Cabot, their captain. He wears windbreak, hat and boots, all of them are purple. Also, even if I can't see his face but I can still find out his sense of pride while looking at his back

In this picture, John Cabot and the seaman reached the shore of Labrador. In the middle of the scene is John Cabot who was giving a lecture to his seaman. He wears imperial uniform with a sword on the waist and holds England's flag in his left hand.He's speaking filled with enthusiasm and confident. His seaman were all looking at him.


2、Ten facts about John Cabot:




  • John Cabot (about 1450-1499) was an Italian-born English explorer and navigator.




  • In Italy, he is known as Giovanni Caboto (which is his original name).




  • He was the first European since the Vikings to explore the mainland of North America and the first to search for the Northwest Passage.




  • He believed that Asia could be reached by sailing west.




  • In 1493, when word of Columbus’ reports of his successful journey to the New World arrived, Cabot convinced King Henry VII that England did not have to sit still while the Spaniards helped themselves to the New World.




  • Cabot about 1450-1499, the Matthew , on May 2, 1497.




  • He sailed further north, making the first recorded attempt to find the Northwest Passage, only to find ice-crusted waters.




  • When Cabot arrived back in England, he was given a hero’s welcome for (supposedly) reading the "Land of Spices."




  • He was made an admiral and sent immediately back to find Japan.




  • Some historians believe that Cabot returned from his second expedition and died around 1499 in England.


3. Why is he important to Canadian history?



John Cabot explored North America for England in 1497 he sailed to what is now eastern Canada. Then,the English developed Canadian land.



4. Why did he leave Europe?



Firstly, he believed that Asia could be reached by sailing west but found North America in the end by viking.Secondly, he traveled to Dutch and search for New Amsterdam. The last time, England would not finance his exploring voyages,so he went to the dutch and they did but he never back.



5. What happened to John Cabot?



Back in England, Cabot was made an Admiral and rewarded with £10. Also,He was written for a new voyage.Later, a pension of £20 a year was granted to him. The next year, 1498, he departed again, with 5 ships this time. One of the ships returned to an Irish port because of damage taken on in a storm. John Cabot and his expedition were never heard from again and are presumed to have been lost at sea.

I learnt that Columbus was the first person who viking across the Atlantic and found a part of Indian land.Five years after Cloumbus, there was a man who traveled to the west and found such lots lands、provinces and regions.He is John Cabot.He was born in Italy,moved to England and left there on May 2, 1497.One month ago,he set a land——Newfoundland. He found tall trees and special animals on this land.Also,he doscovered lots of cod in the sea.He back to hometown and recived as a hero.
