1. Why would Samuel De Champlain want to have a monopoly on the fur trade? Explain in 3-5 sentences. What does monopoly mean?

Monopoly: The exclusive possession or control of the trade in a commodity or service. Champlain calculated that the fur trade would produce an annual income for his country and himself. The furs about beavers, foxes and wolves would bring increasing amount of profits, even if as a result of the “short route to China”. This benefit must attract Champlain a lot. That’s why he decided to regained his monopoly on the fur trade. Who want to give up those gigantic advantages? He wanted to get the profits by the fur trade without ease.

2. Why would the King want to set up French colonies in Canada? Explain in 3-5 sentences.

The king instructed his partners to “carry on all work that he shall judge necessary for establishing the colonies that we wish to found in the said country.” What the king said means he hope someone could discover a New France. Depend on the colonies that the Samuel De Champlain related, the country produced an annual income of approximately 5,400,000 livers mostly from fishing, mining and furs. If the France continued to colonize, it must get more advantages. The lands of Canada are fertile that benefit for people to live and business. The lands have already been explored by Champlain and he confirmed how suitable the lands are. It goes without doubt that the king should make it as colony.

3. Can you find two pictures of Port Royal, Nova Scotia today on the Internet? What does it look like? Explain each picture in 5-8 sentences what you see.

This picture is a top view of the Port Royal, Nova Scotia. The city is overlooked from above, I can see it's a beautiful islands all around sea.The shape of Port Royal is like a long and wriggly dragon which is swimming across the sea. The sea attracts my eyes with it's azure and limps body. Also, I can notice the house of this city are in neat order. I can clearly distinguish between the villages and the roads. The area is protruding to the sky.

It's an interesting picture that reveals a peculiar animal which living in the sea of Port Royal of Canada. It's called the whale!! The huge and strong tail of it is protruding above the sea, forming an exquisite radian. The water splashed in all directions around the whale's tail. Not far from the whale, all the visitors on the boat are focused on what they are looking at. They are so fortunate to see that amazing scene. All of them are wearing cheerful look. The boat seems very minor when it comparing with the whale's tail. But it's only a bit part of the whale's body. Hence, you can guess how mammoth the whale is!

The houses in the picture is a small hotel. They are not luxury enough but give me a feeling as warm as spring. The environment around the hotel is neat and the grassland is bluish green. The style of the hotel is simple but if you pay attention on it, you may discover something exquisite on the house, such as the red flowers' baskets in front of the doors and some bundle trees near the house.

This picture is truly lovely!! It's the harbour of Nova Scotia. The boats which are drawing alongside in the harbour are very elegant and cute to notice.Look at the one that has light red color inside the hull on the left side, it's just like a piece of watermelon!! The white side give the audience a neat feeling. The middle one between the boats is simple but interesting shape. It's looked like a shoes of clown. My favourite boat is the right one. The colour of it's body is very thoughtful. The style make me want to row it now!!!

Reflection about this week

______This week we practiced the vocabulary for both of the worldly wise one and two. Also, I have a better understanding on reading poems by performing the “SNOWMAN”. It’s a very sorrowful poem, everyone of the class were too sad to laugh during the performance…. It’s a really useful poem for me to improve. Moreover, we begin to read the Crossroad again and do the reading log everyday. For the computer laboratory, we did a new chapter about a new explorer------- Samuel De Champlain!!! I haven’t finished it yet… On the last class of this week, we did an essay. The topic is very difficult for me just like the provincial exams!! I can’t finish it within the fix time. But it’s just the beginning of the term…We have to write this level of essay every Friday….. Do you want to really kill me Ms.Chan? I’m so lovely, please!!!

He wears a long windbreak which is floating. He holds a hat in his left hand and facing to the splendid restaurant. At this point of view, Samuel De Champlain is as tall as the restaurant. Audience can sense how composed he is when looking at the back of the statue.

He is Samuel De Champlain whose nationality is French.When Samuel De Champlain was young,his father was a seaman. Young Samuel was trained in seamanship and map making. Champlain went off to war in Spain when he was still a young man .When the war ended Samuel received a reward of money. He was given a command of a ship going to the West Indies. This was the small start to be a big adventure. Champlain left Spain after he war for his first voyage. He explored West Indian, then Mexico. Finally, he stopped at the central of American and traveled back to his hometown-----France.Samuel De Champlain left port from France to make his second voyage in the year of 1603.He then explored Canada before retuning back to France.His third voyage he started from France and headed back to Canada.Finally, he died on Christmas Day.

2. What is his relationship with Canada? Why is he important to Canada?

Samuel De Champlain is an important explorer for Canada who traveled into the St. Lawrence River. When he returned as head of an exploration, he found Quebec City with intention of making the area part of French colony. He also built a fur trading outpost where he would forge a trading with Algonquin and Huron nations. He was an early explorer of the Great Lakes, associated waterways and an excellent cartographer.

3. When did he explore? What was happening during history at this time?

In 1603, Champlain sailed to France on expedition. In 1604, he complied the king of French to discover New France. Then, he returned to Canada, he sailed around and charted most of the coast of Nova Scotia and down the coast of Cape Cod and Massachusetts and later to Rhode Island. In 1605, Champlain discovered a colony in Nova Scotia. In 1608, he led 32 colonists to settle Quebec but nine colonists survived bitter winter in Quebec. During this time, there was a political meeting. but more settlers arrived the following summer. 1609, Champlain traveled to Canada to help Huron Indian to fight with Iroquois. Then he discovered Lake Champlain. Finally, he traveled to Canada in July, 1629 to fight with English.

Depending on the map, I can found the clearly route of Samuel De Champlain. The red arrow represents the exploration between 1609 and 1613. At that time, Champlain discovered Gulf of St. Lawrence. He passed through the Quebec, Martha’s Vineyard and Ottawa here. Then, he traveled Lack Champlain to Lake Oneida. During the time of 1615 to 1616, he explored from Lake Oneida to Lake Ni pissing and then passed through Ottawa River. In the end Samuel De Champlain traveled around Lake Ontario and Lake Huron. They are part of Great Lakes.

5. Why did he explore? What were his reasons for exploration?

In 1603, Champlain sailed to France on expedition. They sailed up the St. Lawrence River and Gasp Peninsula. Then he wanted to explore again, the reason is he wanted to search for a Northwest Passage and to settle the Gasp Peninsula. In 1604, he complied the king of French to discover New France. Then, he returned to Canada, he sailed around and charted most of the coast of Nova Scotia and down the coast of Cape Cod and Massachusetts and later to Rhode Island. After a short time in France, Champlain returned to Canada and helped found a colony in Nova Scotia in 1605. In 1608, he led 32 colonists to settle Quebec. This time he wanted to build up a fur-trading center. In 1609, Champlain befriended with the Huron Indian and helped them fight the Iroquois. That’s why he traveled to Canada again. Thus time he discovered Lake Champlain. He headed the Quebec for years, until the English attacked and took for Quebec. There fore, he traveled to Canada in July, 1629.

6. How did he explore? What transportation methods did he use?

Samuel Champlain did not study Ancient Greek or Latin like other explorers. He instead learned to navigate, draw and make marine maps. On his first trip to North America, Champlain traveled for observing, with members of a fur-trading. He was anxious to see by himself all way and the placed that Jacques Cartier followed or saw. He learnt increasing amount from Cartier and created a map of the St. Lawrence River. He also made friend with the Indians. This step helped him to discovered Canada.

1. What have you learned since September in Canadian Studies? (Or since you started to take the class)

I learned the explorations about John Cabot and Jacques Cartier from their countries to North west Passage. Both of them are brave and received gigantic achievements. John Cabot discovered the coast of the Newfoundland and the shore of Labrador. Also, he found a great quantity of abundant fish during the exploring witch called the cod. But a serious mistake of his life was he realized that the lands where he discovered were all the parts of Asia until he died.The other famous explorer is Jacques Cartier, he explored increasing amount of new lands for his country and edited the map of them. People could understand the topography of Northwest now, such as the "Gulf of Saint Lawrence".In addition, he leaded the fur trade for the business man for his country.Both of them contributed for their countries but also they created the conflict for the Native people, the land of native people became colonies for their countries. Also, we learned some details about those two main characters, such as the fur trade and the scurvy.After the exploration lesson, I learned "" What you think is what you see" ,including the flat earth and I did a discussion about human beings.Finally, we did a special performance about the Puppet show and tested our Viking ship. They are very creative way to show the understand about Canadian study lesson!

2. What is the most memorable lesson you remember? (if you weren't here, maybe at another school)

It must be the performance about the puppet show. It's a really creative way to show our understanding on the explorations. We chose John Cabot and thought about his experiences. We wrote the play by ourselves, every one in our group has humor and creative ideas about his experiences. What we said is brief but significant and it’s an easy way to practice English. We all feel happy when we saw the video of our performance. We tied the best to imitate the voice of man and other onomatopoeia. Cooperating with friends is very meaningful! I can't wait to show it to the class!!

3. Think about your life as a student here since September. Have you changed? How?

Absolutely------YES!!! For the beginning of the class, I felt little nervous because I realized all the lessons are difficult for me to learn, such as the Worldly Wise and the Crossroad Reading. Especially the Crossroad, I can still remember the first week when I read it. They are so depth! I have to spend nearly two hours to read it and answered the questions everyday!! It’s nearly drove me crazy. But now, after doing increasing amounts of essays and finished the provincial exams, it’s much easier for me to understand them than before. I can do it faster and get the ideas easier. The other transformation for me is typing essays. It's one of the most headache evens for me during the past years. I always afraid of staying in front of the computer and typed the essay before. I can’t use the keyboard well and the speed of my typing is just as slow as a snail. In order to finished the provincial exam, I practice typing every day. For now, it’s much faster than before!! All in all should thanks to the English 10 and Canadian study class!!

4. What is your goal for yourself by June? What is your plan to study?

I need to practice writing the essays especially the personal narrative. I knew this kind of essay is very important for English ten students if you want to get a higher mark. Also, I have to persuade myself to read poem. It’s really an ordeal for me. Every time I feel headache when I have to read it and answer the multiple choices. But actually, the poem is a graceful art so I hope to try my best to understand it first. This plan is my first step for June. I would finish the homework on time and check my blogger everyday.Then, I need to recite some vocabulary and read some high mark essays.Also, I want to challenge myself on finishing the bonus questions behind the crossroad narratives.I hope I could act as what I say.

5. What are you most proud of in school since September? Have you done your best?

I can feel my English level is increasing step by step since September that's what I most proud of myself. I knew I worked hard, I did homework every day and I never broke Ms. Chan's heart. I could write the essay with thoughtful ideas, that what I can’t do before. I'm not good at doing multiple choices after reading some difficult articles but at least I finished the provincial exams! That’s why I can improve my English. Even if I worked hard on learning English, but I know I haven't done my best. It's because I seldom win the bonus mark. I only did what I must complete but I seldom challenge myself.

Exploration can create conflict and misunderstanding.

_____Everything that people did have a process, whether the consequence is advantageous or not, people who were involved into the process would pay through it, just like people explored the land for their country. Exploration can develop a country but also create conflict and misunderstanding. Animals would suffer a lot because of the strangers who explored their home, different culture and custom created misunderstanding during the exploration and the Native people would face to leave their land or might be die.

_____Animals became the victims in the explorations. The Sea Mink, which used to live in the coastal waters of Newfoundland but now it was eradicated by the fur trade. It was not the only victim, a great deal of animals died by the exploring. Jacques Cartier is one of the famous explorers who traveled around North Passage and discovered those abundant animals in New found land. He exchanged the goods of furs with the Native people by using irons. It’s a disastrous conflict for the nature. Quite soon, the furs of these poor animals became to the clothes, hats and bags for ornamenting people's body in western countries. There fore, the conflict between people and animals was set up by explorations.

_____ Moreover, the matter of exploration created a cultural misunderstanding between the Native people and the British. Comparing those two societies, when the Britain was developing speedily at that time, the Native people still retained customs in primitive way. The completely different cultures between those two kinds of people, creates misunderstandings. They are both stranger to each other, different appearance and language set up a difficult communication when John Cabot discovered the New found land at the first time. The way that the Native people entertained others was such strange action for the English. 1. If the maps around you showed the existence of the Northwest Passage, would you believe it? Why?

Yes I would, because I believed there are some new lands in the world except Asia. If people want to arrange the map for these lands such as northwest, they need to pay lots of tensions on exploring it and take notes for the geography of lakes, mountains or forests. Then, they come back to analyze what they saw and arrange the note for drawing the map. It’s a difficult way for people to remember the all where they just explored, but most of the notes should be right. Thus, even if they got some wrong messages on the map of the northwest Passage I can still believe the truth of the map.

2. If you were John Cabot and someone told you the Northwest Passage didn't exist. What would you say? What would you feel? How would you react?

I would say "perhaps there are still a minute quantity of the lands that haven't been exist but I could say most of Northwest haven been found by me!!!" I would feel exasperated by the people who told me the northwest passage didn't exist because I tried my best to discovered new lands for my country even risked my life but the consequence of that is someone still doesn't believe what I observed. I would be shocked by the person instead of reaction.

This map describes the route chart about the exploration by Humphrey Gilbert who traveled around Northwest.He began at England and traveled to Canada. He passed through the Newfoundland and come over to Nova Scottia
about Canada, then he came back from there to Azores. His exploration is from European to Northwest.

4. Why did the Northwest Passage suit the goals (agenda) of the European explorers and monarchs?

There are lots of valuable goods in the Northwest Passage such as the cod, Furs and fertile lands. The goods on this land have never been seen until the explorations but all of them are very suitable for people to use. The goals that monarchs hope the European explored is find those valuable things for the country. That's why Northwest Passage suit the goals.

5. Feedback loops help us to see reality as a system. Can you think of an example of a feedback loop from your own life?

When I finish an essay I hope everything just fine.But I knew there are still some problems for me about the essay, maybe the grammar or even substantial in content. If ms.Chan doesn't help me with feedback loops I would never know my problems and I would never improve. Every suggestions help me get better than before so the feedback loops are important for me.
