1. What have you learned since September in Canadian Studies? (Or since you started to take the class)

I learned the explorations about John Cabot and Jacques Cartier from their countries to North west Passage. Both of them are brave and received gigantic achievements. John Cabot discovered the coast of the Newfoundland and the shore of Labrador. Also, he found a great quantity of abundant fish during the exploring witch called the cod. But a serious mistake of his life was he realized that the lands where he discovered were all the parts of Asia until he died.The other famous explorer is Jacques Cartier, he explored increasing amount of new lands for his country and edited the map of them. People could understand the topography of Northwest now, such as the "Gulf of Saint Lawrence".In addition, he leaded the fur trade for the business man for his country.Both of them contributed for their countries but also they created the conflict for the Native people, the land of native people became colonies for their countries. Also, we learned some details about those two main characters, such as the fur trade and the scurvy.After the exploration lesson, I learned "" What you think is what you see" ,including the flat earth and I did a discussion about human beings.Finally, we did a special performance about the Puppet show and tested our Viking ship. They are very creative way to show the understand about Canadian study lesson!

2. What is the most memorable lesson you remember? (if you weren't here, maybe at another school)

It must be the performance about the puppet show. It's a really creative way to show our understanding on the explorations. We chose John Cabot and thought about his experiences. We wrote the play by ourselves, every one in our group has humor and creative ideas about his experiences. What we said is brief but significant and it’s an easy way to practice English. We all feel happy when we saw the video of our performance. We tied the best to imitate the voice of man and other onomatopoeia. Cooperating with friends is very meaningful! I can't wait to show it to the class!!

3. Think about your life as a student here since September. Have you changed? How?

Absolutely------YES!!! For the beginning of the class, I felt little nervous because I realized all the lessons are difficult for me to learn, such as the Worldly Wise and the Crossroad Reading. Especially the Crossroad, I can still remember the first week when I read it. They are so depth! I have to spend nearly two hours to read it and answered the questions everyday!! It’s nearly drove me crazy. But now, after doing increasing amounts of essays and finished the provincial exams, it’s much easier for me to understand them than before. I can do it faster and get the ideas easier. The other transformation for me is typing essays. It's one of the most headache evens for me during the past years. I always afraid of staying in front of the computer and typed the essay before. I can’t use the keyboard well and the speed of my typing is just as slow as a snail. In order to finished the provincial exam, I practice typing every day. For now, it’s much faster than before!! All in all should thanks to the English 10 and Canadian study class!!

4. What is your goal for yourself by June? What is your plan to study?

I need to practice writing the essays especially the personal narrative. I knew this kind of essay is very important for English ten students if you want to get a higher mark. Also, I have to persuade myself to read poem. It’s really an ordeal for me. Every time I feel headache when I have to read it and answer the multiple choices. But actually, the poem is a graceful art so I hope to try my best to understand it first. This plan is my first step for June. I would finish the homework on time and check my blogger everyday.Then, I need to recite some vocabulary and read some high mark essays.Also, I want to challenge myself on finishing the bonus questions behind the crossroad narratives.I hope I could act as what I say.

5. What are you most proud of in school since September? Have you done your best?

I can feel my English level is increasing step by step since September that's what I most proud of myself. I knew I worked hard, I did homework every day and I never broke Ms. Chan's heart. I could write the essay with thoughtful ideas, that what I can’t do before. I'm not good at doing multiple choices after reading some difficult articles but at least I finished the provincial exams! That’s why I can improve my English. Even if I worked hard on learning English, but I know I haven't done my best. It's because I seldom win the bonus mark. I only did what I must complete but I seldom challenge myself.

Exploration can create conflict and misunderstanding.

_____Everything that people did have a process, whether the consequence is advantageous or not, people who were involved into the process would pay through it, just like people explored the land for their country. Exploration can develop a country but also create conflict and misunderstanding. Animals would suffer a lot because of the strangers who explored their home, different culture and custom created misunderstanding during the exploration and the Native people would face to leave their land or might be die.

_____Animals became the victims in the explorations. The Sea Mink, which used to live in the coastal waters of Newfoundland but now it was eradicated by the fur trade. It was not the only victim, a great deal of animals died by the exploring. Jacques Cartier is one of the famous explorers who traveled around North Passage and discovered those abundant animals in New found land. He exchanged the goods of furs with the Native people by using irons. It’s a disastrous conflict for the nature. Quite soon, the furs of these poor animals became to the clothes, hats and bags for ornamenting people's body in western countries. There fore, the conflict between people and animals was set up by explorations.

_____ Moreover, the matter of exploration created a cultural misunderstanding between the Native people and the British. Comparing those two societies, when the Britain was developing speedily at that time, the Native people still retained customs in primitive way. The completely different cultures between those two kinds of people, creates misunderstandings. They are both stranger to each other, different appearance and language set up a difficult communication when John Cabot discovered the New found land at the first time. The way that the Native people entertained others was such strange action for the English. Before this exploration, the Native people haven't seen the guns or cannon anymore and the English couldn't believe that human can use pigments to represent clothes on their skins. Hence, there must exist the misunderstanding between the English and Native people because of their different cultures.

_____After the misunderstanding, the real conflict occurred on this peaceful land.An important case of this point was the desire of the English. The fertile land and suitable environment inflame their king's desire to possess the land. In addition, the weapon and technology of the Native people were made sure by the John Cabot during the exploration. Everything about them was much more backward than the English. 1. If the maps around you showed the existence of the Northwest Passage, would you believe it? Why?

Yes I would, because I believed there are some new lands in the world except Asia. If people want to arrange the map for these lands such as northwest, they need to pay lots of tensions on exploring it and take notes for the geography of lakes, mountains or forests. Then, they come back to analyze what they saw and arrange the note for drawing the map. It’s a difficult way for people to remember the all where they just explored, but most of the notes should be right. Thus, even if they got some wrong messages on the map of the northwest Passage I can still believe the truth of the map.

2. If you were John Cabot and someone told you the Northwest Passage didn't exist. What would you say? What would you feel? How would you react?

I would say "perhaps there are still a minute quantity of the lands that haven't been exist but I could say most of Northwest haven been found by me!!!" I would feel exasperated by the people who told me the northwest passage didn't exist because I tried my best to discovered new lands for my country even risked my life but the consequence of that is someone still doesn't believe what I observed. I would be shocked by the person instead of reaction.

3. Find a map by Humphrey Gilbert from 1582. What do you see in the picture? Explain.

This map describes the route chart about the exploration by Humphrey Gilbert who traveled around Northwest.He began at England and traveled to Canada. He passed through the Newfoundland and come over to Nova Scottia
about Canada, then he came back from there to Azores. His exploration is from European to Northwest.

4. Why did the Northwest Passage suit the goals (agenda) of the European explorers and monarchs?

There are lots of valuable goods in the Northwest Passage such as the cod, Furs and fertile lands. The goods on this land have never been seen until the explorations but all of them are very suitable for people to use. The goals that monarchs hope the European explored is find those valuable things for the country. That's why Northwest Passage suit the goals.

5. Feedback loops help us to see reality as a system. Can you think of an example of a feedback loop from your own life?

When I finish an essay I hope everything just fine.But I knew there are still some problems for me about the essay, maybe the grammar or even substantial in content. If ms.Chan doesn't help me with feedback loops I would never know my problems and I would never improve. Every suggestions help me get better than before so the feedback loops are important for me.

I learnt the explorations about John Cabot and Jacques Cartier and the informations about their experiences. Also, I learnt why did the Northwest land became to the colonization of England and French. Moreover, I learnt the cause of the fur trade and how did it affect animals.

In this colorful picture, I can clearly saw the earth is just a flat land in the space. The land is riotous with color that reveals mountains, grassland and lakes. All of the views are overspread with the beautiful sky and atmospheres. It is like half circle hood witch made of cloud covering the real earth. On the other side, the earth was like a big root-out land. There is nothing on this side, no water, no sky or other living beings. It shows the earth is just flat and we could only live in the opposite side. There also exis other planets in the space. All of them set the earth off with shining bodies. The right corner planet is the nearest one to the earth that is round but very small. It can also set out that the earth is flat.

It’s a fascinating picture that shows flat earth. The picture is looked like a colorful page of fairy tales that allows the sun, the moon and the stars appeared at the same time. All of them are covered inside the earth. The sun‘s face is in smiling and looking at a lady who is protruding her head out of the earth. She is observing the outside world carefully and attracted by what she noticed. Behind the lady is the view of the earth witch we lived in. Its shows a normal sign, beautiful sky、fertile farm and some little villages. Especially a big tree witch tower to the sky! All of them are novel but not as strange as the world outside. There is no space or planet around the earth but another fairy story’s world. Maybe it’s the heaven with pink cloud and four-in-hand coach. The girl looked like look forward to go to that place.

The human beings are not always on a correct stand. For example, depending on human's eyes, the size of the sun is just looked like a plate or basketball. Actually, the being of human is against with the reality. The sun is much more bigger than a plate even if the earth.That's why I realize they have a false concept of the earth today.Also, if the earth is real flat how could the time different among the regions or countries. When I stayed in Canada, I made a phone call to my parents in the night. But at the other side of the phone, my parents were working because the time was just the afternoon in China. How could the sun and the moon appeared at the same time on the sky if the earth is flat?

Our puppet show is about John Cabot's exploration.He asked the king of his country to let him explore Asia and give him enough money, sailors and ships. He tried to persuade the king by using the advantage after the exploration.He wined in the end ,and began his long route.During Viking, he found a valuable food----the Cod.There is a funny conversation between Cabot and the cod.After dusk, John Cabot discovered the New found land appearing on the sea abruptly when he was recalling his wife and family.He thought it was Asia and cheered with his sailors.Actually,it wasn't Asia but North America that they have just found. Also, he discovered a special fish called Cod.This cod lead the sailors sailed to New found Land and fight with native people.In the end,all of the native people died.Cabot wined the new land and sailed back to England for visiting his king.When he reached England,he found crowded crowd were welcoming them.He offered the cod and told the king about the exploration.

I want you to notice that our group paid lots of energy on this show.We seek lots of the introductions about Cabot and the experience about him and his sailors.We used several hours on painting the picture of the background. We want you notice the clearly process about the exploration so we decided to use camera to video it.

We worked very well because we respected others and we spent the times after school in my home. We cherished every minutes on our puppet show and communicated with everyone who worked in our group.

_______Nowadays there is a growing awareness that exploration is important for countries or societies. People were asked by the countries to explore in some dangerous places such as the high mountains, dense forests, and even he moon. Actually, exploration has been an important part for countries since ancient times. Depending on exploration, people can discover lots of abundant resources that they haven’t noticed before, countries can set up more relations with other countries for their people and it’s a good way for the countries to develop faster.

_______Lots of valuable resources can be found by explorations. Formerly, everywhere in the world haven't advanced totally. There are no cars, planes or trains. The Vikings could only explore by Viking ships and spent all the times drift about in the sea. Though exploration is not an easy commission, it can't cease the people whose heart is filled with curiosity about the world. Columbus is one of the crazy people who discovered the New World for Spain. When he reached Saudi Arabia he discovered various kinds of spice trades. All of them have miraculous tastes and attracted Columbus a lot. He communicated with Arabs for the spice and he was allowed to entry into spice trades for his country-----Spain! Depending on this business, Spanish people can enjoy different food with spice trade that they haven't tasted before. In addition .Cod is a wonderful food that has been found during exploration by John Cabot. This kind of fish wasn't been awarded by people before, they lived in the ocean near Newfoundland. John Cabot found that kind of fish at the same time as he reached North America .People in England can eat the fish after the exploration. In summary, without explorations people can't understand how mystical the world is and can't enjoy abundant resources exceed their short side.

_______Countries can establish more relations with other countries or their people by explorations. Columbus didn't have enough money on his exploration. Fortunately, he reached Spain and met their queen. On his way, he persuaded the Queen to aid financially and adopts friendship with his country ---Portugal. As the old saying goes,” more friends more chances.” Columbus helped his country an establish relation with other countries. Moreover, Jacques Cartier sailed to Canada’s land Nicolette with some business man for learning their language of Native. This behave let is country set up a relation with Native people and they went on exchanging of commodities. After that, western people could wear fur clothes which from the fox, beaver and wolf. Also, the business man was happy with the interests they got from the fur trade. Thus, set up more relations with others can benefit not only their countries but also their people.

_______Exploration is a strong way for countries to develop faster. In the past, development is the most important business for a country. Do you know the map "Gulf of Saint Lawrence" This famous map was written by Jacques Cartier who sailed over the Gulf of St.Lawrence and went to Quebec and Montreal? The map reveals the details about the way along the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. This map helped French people to understand Canadian topography a lot. They could travel around Canada easily for business or probe resources. Besides this reason, after made sure the geography, climate and people on the new lands that have been found during explorations. The sailors always came back to their own countries and reported the findings of Vikings. Those fantastic lands and suitable environment are deeply touched by their king. The country would like to extend their land and those new lands were become to the countries' colony. More lands brought more national economy. Then, the countries will develop speedily. Therefore, country may develop faster because of the explorations.

_______All in all, given more explorations, countries may discover much more abundant resources that they haven’t noticed before, set up more relations with other countries for their people and it’s a best way for the countries to develop faster. There is nothing to match explorations for its dangerous, difficult but brilliant achievement.
